CHARM Interviewer (CI): In technical language, what is the research you do here at CHARM?
Joseph Avenoso (JA): I built a time-domain terahertz spectroscopy system to characterize materials by their terahertz emission strength/polarization and their absorption resonances, such as phonons and magnons. The setup also includes a time-resolved component that will be used to investigate coupling mechanisms.
CI: What is a skill you would like to build on while being a part of CHARM?
JA: Project management – independently handling collaborations and projects with other grad students.
CI: What’s your favorite part of being with CHARM?
JA: I enjoy the collaborative setting and having my hands in multiple projects that extend beyond my typical field of study.
CI: Are there any other student/campus organizations you belong to?
JA: The Physics and Astronomy Graduate Student Society.
CI: What do you enjoy doing on your downtime outside of the lab?
JA: I enjoy playing and watching hockey.
